They split atoms, they create intelligent machines, they clone living beings and alter their genetic code. These are just a few of the wonders performed by technology. All this science doesn’t grant any mean against the forthcoming disaster. Instead, they speed it up pretty well.

Come stregoni o profeti, i tecnici e gli scienziati continuano a spingere oltre i limiti umani. Dividono gli atomi, creano macchine intelligenti, clonano esseri viventi e alterano il codice genetico. Questi sono solo alcune delle meraviglie della tecnologia. Tutta questa scienza non è in grado di produrre alcuna soluzione contro l’imminente disastro ambientale, ma con tenacia lo accelera.

Technicians’ only concern is to design working machines, whether a blender button or the one to toggle an atomic bomb: as long as the device works properly, the job is done and the conscience is clear.

They ignore, or they decide to overlook, the heavy consequences of their work in society, ethics, culture, economy and environment.

L’unica preoccupazione dei tecnici è progettare macchine che funzionano, che sia il bottone di un frullatore o quello per innescare la bomba atomica. I loro lavoro finisce quando l’interruttore funziona. Ignorano o decidono di passare oltre, le conseguenze sociali, etiche, culturali, economiche e ambientali del loro lavoro.

The machines we interact with are closed books to us. Machine functions and running orders are already set within the interface, be them complex as an operating system or quite simple, as a lamp switch. Only the techincians can decrypt and understand the language of the machines. It’s up to them to decide what can be done, and what can’t.

To be able to communicate with a machine beyond the interface requires particular skills, whose complexity is proportional to that of the machine itself. Increasing the complexity of the device,the number of people able to understand it will diminsh. Some complex, multi-language machines require a whole team of techincians to be put to work.

Per comunicare con le macchine oltre l’interfaccia, sono necessarie alcune competenze specifiche, la cui complessità è proporzionale a quella della macchina stessa. Aumentare la complessità del dispositivo significa ridurre il numero di persone in grado di dialogare con esso. Scientists and techincians are quite willing to renounce the neutrality to satisfy who feed them. Some scientists and physicians are responsibles for the misinformation and the lies about the damages caused by cigarette smoke, sugar, meat and dairy, just to make a few examples.

Technicians sold their power to politicians and corporations. Techicians work for social controll, military strength, automation and consumption.

When technology came, society was restructured around machine activity rather than human needs. Economy prevailed and production became compulsive. We can see the consequences as plastic islands and trash mountains.

Con l’avvento della tecnologia, la società fu ristrutturata sul funzionamento delle macchine, e non più sui bisogni umani. L’economia prese il sopravvento e la produzione divenne compulsiva. Le conseguenze si vedono nelle isole di plastica e nelle montagne di rifiuti. 

Before industrialization people used to extract and craft what they needed. Useless things were a luxury for few. When humanity delegated production to machines, slow and complex processes became automatic. The relationship with things changed. 

Prima dell’industrializzazione si estraeva e trasformava ciò che serviva, il futile era un lusso riservato a pochi. Quando la produzione fu delegata alle macchine, processi lenti e complessi, divennero automatici. Il rapporto con  gli oggetti cambiò.

Machines are designed to simulate and substitute human activities, delegate human activities to the machines means to stress quantitative value. We produce everything that’s possible but not the essential. 

Le macchine sono progettate per simulare e sostituire le attività umane, la delega alle macchine esaspera gli aspetti quantitativi. Si produce tutto ciò che è possibile, ma non ciò che è necessario. 

Early machinery was designed to automate production processes that required hard and monotonous work. Production was severed into micro-actions. An endless repetition of one simple movement that destroyed every art and technique. 

Le prime macchine furono progettate per automatizzare i lavori ripetitivi e faticosi. La produzione fu frazionata in micro-azioni. Un solo gesto ripetuto all’infinito, senza arte né tecnica.

For centuries, everyone was able to produce and to gather food by him-herself. To forge, to build or to weave were common activities. In the age of technology, we’ve lost the knowledge to produce what we consume. 

Per secoli, ognuno era capace di produrre e raccogliere il cibo che mangiava. Plasmare, costruire o tessere erano pratiche diffuse. Nell’era tecnologica, abbiamo perso la capacità di produrre ciò che consumiamo.

Before the machine, goods were mostly, produced and transformed by single individuals instead of big companies. The link to the world was physical.  In the technological society we had gradually lost the contact with the earth and its cycles. 

Prima dell’avvento delle macchine, i beni venivano processati e trasformati da singoli individui e non da grandi compagnie. Il contatto con il mondo era fisico. Nella società tecnologica abbiamo a poco a poco perso la connessione con la terra e i suoi ritmi.

Then humanity delegated also the intellectual and communicational activities and now computers rule the social life. Our memories are pixel in digital photography, our thoughts are binary codes, enclosed within the boundaries of mouse and keyboard . We communicate through bits and electromagnetic signals.

Alle macchine furono poi delegate anche le attività di pensiero e comunicazione e oggi il computer domina la vita sociale. Le nostre memorie sono pixel di foto digitali, il nostro pensiero è un codice binario, rinchiuso nelle funzioni di tastiera e mouse. Comunichiamo in bit e segnali elettromagnetici. 

Sentences become short and simple. The language is simplified and standardized. Pictures replace words. There is no space for complex ideas. People spend their lives connected with distant worlds but cut off from reality.

Le frasi diventano brevi e semplici.  Il linguaggio è impoverito  e standardizzato.  Le parole sono sostituite da immagini. Non c’è spazio per idee complesse. Le persone trascorrono la vita costantemente connesse con mondi distanti ma separate dalla realtà.

In the technological age, machines provide us of all our needs. Products automatically arrive in the supermarkets  and we don’t know where they come from nor how they are made. This abundance made humanity forgot how to provide its own needs.

Nell’era tecnologica, le macchine ci forniscono tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno. I prodotti arrivano automaticamente nei supermercati e noi non sappiamo da dove vengano o come siano stati prodotti. Quest’abbondanza ha portato l’umanità a dimenticare come si soddisfano i propri bisogni.

Raw materials are serially turned into products by the industries. We don’t know how this affects environment and life forms throughout all the process.

I materiali vengono costantemente trasformati in prodotti dall’industria. Noi non sappiamo come questo danneggia l’ambiente e le forme di vita nelle varie fasi del processo.

The machine’s efficiency is something people always rely on; it is a pillar our everyday life is built upon. The car is filled up, light is plugged and the wi-fi’s on. Temperature is rising, the air is unbreathable and nuclear waste lie in the ocean. When the machine collapse, who will be able to survive?

Le persone hanno una fiducia cieca nell’efficienza delle macchine, è uno dei pilastri su cui è costruita la nostra vita quotidiana. La macchina ha il pieno, la luce è accesa, c’è il wi-fi. La temperatura sta salendo, l’aria è irrespirabile e i rifiuti nucleari sono nel mare. Quando la macchina collasserà, chi sarà in grado di sopravvivere?

The link between increasing co2 and earth temperature was first theorized and verified in 1859. Since then the technological society has been obsessively measuring the climate change, making projections about consequences and designing new machines to calculate the temperatures. Nothing has been done but observing the apocalypse day by day.

La connessione tra l’aumento della co2 e la temperatura della terra fu teorizzata e verificata nel 1859. Da allora, la società tecnologica ha ossessivamente misurato il cambiamento climatico, facendo proiezioni sulle conseguenze e progettato nuove macchine per calcolare le temperature. Machines only deal with quantitative aspects of reality such as weight, size, frequency, intensity, position and speed. Machines reduce the world in numbers. The computer, a key product in the technological society, is a machine that turns texts, pictures and sounds in long sequences of 0 and 1 and recodes them in digital texts, pictures and sounds.

 Le macchine interagiscono solo con gli aspetti quantitativi della realtà come il peso, la dimensione, la frequenza, l’intensità, la posizione e la velocità. Le macchine riducono il mondo in numeri. Technological society is obsessed with measurement. In order to measure a continuous and irregular reality, you have to reduce it to numbers. Reality becomes sequences of equivalent and separate unity. Everything too complex or unintelligible, everityhing that can’t be reduced to numbers, will disappear from technological reality.

 La società tecnologica è ossessionata dal misurare. Per misurare una realtà continua e irregolare, bisogna ridurla a numeri. La realtà diventa sequenze di unità equivalenti e separate. Tutto ciò che è troppo complesso o incomprensibile, tutto ciò che non può essere ridotto a un numero scomparirà dalla realtà tecnologica.

Reality is more then the number of pieces composing it. An ecosystem is more than the number of animals and plants living in it. A community is more than the number of people that make it up. An individual is more than the number of cells and organs composing the body. In all these realities mysterious balances come from complex and fragile connections.

Too often we see the world through the machines. That’s the reason why we quantify things that nobody can measure. We value people and experiences by the number of views and likes on social networks. This is a process of reality impoverishment. In this process we exchange essential thing for unnecessary stuff.

Troppo spesso guardiamo il mondo attraverso le macchine. Questa è la ragione per la quale quantifichiamo cose che nessuno può misurare. Diamo un valore alle persone e alle esperienze per il numero di visualizzazioni e like che ottengono sui social networks. Questo è un processo di impoverimento della realtà. In questo processo scambiamo l’essenziale con roba inutile.

Machines allow humanity to transform the world. Reality is shaped by machines through production processes. Production is ruled by quantity, produce more and faster. Mass production means standardizations. Produce serial copies of the same object to sell the same product all over the world.

Le macchine permettono all’umanità di trasformare il mondo. La realtà è plasmata dalle macchine attraverso il processo produttivo. La produzione è centrata sulla quantità, produrre di più e più in fretta. La produzione di massa si basa sulla standardizzazione. Produrre copie seriali dello stesso oggetto per vendere lo stesso prodotto ovunque nel mondo. 

This is a process of reality homologation. Wild forests turn into monoculture. Animals and plants genetics are modified to meet production standards. The places we live in become Metropolises, made of skyscrapers, highways and storehouses.

Questo è un processo di omologazione della realtà. Le foreste selvagge si trasformano in monocolture. La genetica di animali e piante viene adattata agli standard di produzione. I luoghi in cui viviamo diventano metropoli, fatte di grattacieli, autostrade e magazzini.

If quantity is the core of production, there is no space for quality. Food, fashion and entertainment industries overproduct goods and services. But food is cheap and poisonous. Clothes, made by toxic materials, last just for one season. People are sad, bored, indifferent. 

Se la quantità è al centro dei meccanismi produttivi, non vi è nessuna cura per la qualità di ciò che si produce. L’industria agroalimentare, tessile, del divertimento e dello svago producono un’enorme quantità di beni e servizi, molti dei quali in sovrapproduzione. Eppure, il cibo è scadente se non malsano, gli indumenti durano poco e contengono materiali tossici, le persone sono sempre più depresse, annoiate e apatiche.
